I have an old house. I recently tried to open the upstairs door with the key for the lock. The problem is that the key doesent work. Does anyone know how to unlock the door without the key. I removed the faceplate but did not help. Calling a locksmith is out of the question. I am going to replace the lock after the door is opened.

Do a Google search for locksmith.

Should be able to find one there that can answer it for you.

Here you can still go to a locksmith and just buy a skeletin key and there are not too many choices.

Spray WD40 or graphite in lock to maybe loosen it up if stuck.

Key may not be the right one.

Try another style key. Explain the problem to the local locksmith and maybe he will let you take some to try and you tell him you will buy the one that works, if one does.

Most skeleton key locksets use one of three or four keys. A hardware store like ACE usually has these keys in stock. Buy one of each and try them.

If a piece of key has broken off inside the lock it may be possible to push it through the lock with the new key.

Have you tried using a hairpin. I used to use one when my daughter locked our door that needed a skeleton key. It takes some patience but does work.
Good luck.
