Go for an SV650 - Bandit handling is way too soft and the UJM 4/4 engine on most of the other suggestions is boring.
I went through this a few years ago and bought a GSX1100 (the sports tourer) which was great fun and which I traded in for a Busa which was brilliant. The Busa is so easy to ride and forgiving of your mistakes, just keep an eye on the speedo!
After 5 years of this I now ride a GPZ500S because it's more fun than the bigger bikes - you can whack the trottle open and not expect to be spat off the bike, but if I could afford it, I would go for the SV because the handling is much better.
I think you owe it to yourself to go for a bigger bike to start with and then gradually chill down after you have got it out of your system. Good luck and take the first couple of thousand miles REAL easy!

Yamaha Fazer 600 or Suzuki SV650 are good bikes to consider as well as the Bandit 600. Book test rides and try all three. Ge tgood quality protective clothing, boots, gloves, crash helmet. And then ENJOY!

It may be different in the UK, here in the US I say run from buying any Suzuki! My brother and I bought 2 new bikes for a summer vacation. His 1200 Bandit leaked gas and ruined the motor before it got 2000 miles. We asked Suzuki to replace the motor so we could go on vacation. The dealer asked for this too to no avail.
It took 2 months to get a rep out, then he said it’s to expensive and would cost $3000. After 4 months and the vacation gone they got the motor rebuilt at a their cost of $3700. The dealer wanted to replace the motor but the Suzuki Rep squashed that on the spot.
The gas stained cases and burnt exhaust pipes were not replaced, the rep wouldn‘t go for it. The bike got nicked and scratched all over from being apart for 6 months, I saw the rep do some of it. The rep rode it and looked at it after it was fixed, then said it’ good as new. It ran like crap and looked worse.
We called Japan, and even wrote the US CEO all for nothing. We spent $15,000 for the bikes to get ripped off by Suzuki. We spent our vacation hassling with Suzuki, and not one person there gave a damn!
Beware Suzuki’s warranty is not worth the paper it’s on! Buy one of their lemons, get shafted, we did!
I’m a 30 yr garage vet and I know when a rep and a manufacturer have ripped off a customer. This one stinks to high heaven! RUN from buying any Suzuki!
You can get a good or bad anything I know . I hope it's different there!!! FYI!!

If you're rusty, a Bandit 600 should get you sorted out. If you have a bit more confidence, try a Bandit 1200 - I've got one and it's an absolute blast. Do it, you know it makes sense.
