Japanese has two kinds of alphabet, Hiragana and Katakana. Hiragana is used when we have no Japanese characters (Kanji) for the words or we don't remember the right Kanji. Katakana is used mainly for foreign names.

Japanese doesn't have an alphabet, it has two
slightly different syllabaries. As you can see from
the website given in another answer the characters
of katakana and hiragana, except for the ones that
designate vowels, stand for two or three letters
each - ka, ke, ki, ko, ku, etc. The character for n
is also single, I think.
