Because of their gorgeous appearance, the peacock has long been famous outside of its native countries of Southern Asia and Malaysia, and was kept for centuries by people first in China and then in Europe. The Phoenicians brought the peacock to Egypt more than three thousand years ago. Historical records indicate that Solomon kept several peacock species, among other pheasants, with the India Blue being his favorite peacock. Peafowl were extensively raised by the Romans for the table as well as for ornamental purposes, and medieval Europe carried on this practice as well. It is only after the XVI Century, when turkeys were imported from Mexico, that the peacock was discarded as a table bird for the more fleshy American birds. Peafowl were also considered a delicacy in these cultures for centuries. Fortunately, few of peacock speciesare used for food today, except in some of the more remote and less civilized places where they are found in nature. See the printed magazine for more information on man's long held fascination and cultural aspects of the peacock

That is a wild bird. The male has blue feathers and green feathers, while the hen is all brown. Male peacocks are 3-4ft. long, while the females are 2 1/2-3 1/2 ft. The average peacock's train(tail)feathers contains 200 feathers. The male weighs 9-13 pounds and the female weighs about 6-9pounds. They reach sexual maturity at 2-3 years and breed mainly in April to September. The female lays 4-6 creamy white eggs, and the eggs take 28 days to incubate. Peacocks live in small, sociable groups of one male and 3-5 hens in hilly forests in India and Sri Lanka. They emerge early in the morning to eat grain, seeds, berries, insects, snakes, and mice and return at dusk to its roost.

Well they are the perfect example of the evolutionary hypothesis; teh "handicap hypothesis". Female peacocks choose males by their colors and large brilliant tail feathers. It is hypothesised that because the male has these features, it is more attractive to the females. because the male has these bright colors and tail that make it very obvious to predators, but still survived long enough to mate, then he must be the strongest and most fit of them all, thereby increasing his chances of mating and increasing his fitness. Basically the mlaes throw caution to the wind in order to mate, which is the primary biological drive of any living creature.
