I agree with you, and I also would like to know what exactly has happened. Were these guys caught in the act with the explosives in the airport? Was it just intelligence of the police that this is what would happen? I heard they were arrested at their homes, so how do we know what the plan was? Do you guys know anything about it?

That's a rediculus question. they'll never ban carry-ons. They check them too closely.
i don't think people realize how much airport security there is. I've been in airports where they wiped down cameras for traces of explosives. the camera of the girl infront of me was labeled suspicious. they later figured out that the substance on the camera was glycerin and it came from her hand lotion.
I've always been asked to take off my shoes so they can go through the x-ray machine. and the metal detector always decides to go off, even if i don't have any metal on me. They pat me down and tell me to go. i've never had a problem with the security. they're just trying to protect the passengers.

oh, i heard earlier today that if you absolutly need to take a liquid along as a carry-on, you need to drink some of it to prove there's nothing hazerdous in it.
