When sites often have too much traffic for one server, they sometimes create several subdomains and point them to different servers. The central server (taking requests from the central subdomain) redirects requests it cannot handle to try and evenly distribute them among all the machines. www is one subdomain, ww2 is another subdomain, etc. You can usually create many, many subdomains if you operate a server. There's nothing really special about it, except that it's a different name and it may or may not point to another machine. Yahoo! has many subdomains, like answers.yahoo.com, search.yahoo.com, mail.yahoo.com, personals.yahoo.com, astrology.yahoo.com, etc. Another use for subdomains is to divide the site into categories. Have a nice day!
