I'm working on an after-school program for 11th and 12th graders in Brooklyn, and want to know what kind of rewards you think would be motivating.

Gift cards to whatever the popular stores are to the teens in that area. They can be any amount. That would sure motivate me! Also getting a paper certificate that I could take home to my parents would be a great idea as well, all you have to pay for is ink for the printer. =) Good luck!

Public praise and approval, especially when it comes from their peers, have a much greater affect on children and adolescents than material prizes. You might consider this when you organize activities. I am not suggesting that you discard the idea of a "prize," but suggesting that you incorporate this into your program wherever and whenever possible.

However, if the praise is artificial they will sense it and it could cause more harm than help.

Just give them A $100.00 gift card to like target or some
kind of store were they can get some new clothes.

Gift cards are good too.
