I have a 98 neon and the air conditioner doesn't work. When I drive it, it blows hot and then cold air, followed again by hot air. It has the right amount of freon in it. When you turn the air on you can hear a clicking noise, what is the clicking noise, what is causing it and how do I fix it? Thanks..

First, i would hook up a gauge set, or have a technician do it,and read the high/low pressure. Its possible the evap temp probe is out of calibration and the evaporator is freezing up. It blows cold untill it freezes then blows warm till it thaws out. The clicking noise may not be related because the mode and temp controls are cable operated and the fresh/recirc door is vacuum controlled. Newer models have electric actuators which could cause the clicking noise. Your possibly hearing the a/c compressor click on.

sounds like the thermostat which controlls the air conditioner pump engageing is faulty,,,,but also could be loose drive belt, check for loose or broken wire at the pump head.
Clicking noise could be the electro magnetic clutch on the air conditioner compressor cycling on and off,,or could be noise from worn belt.
Also,,warning on this type of vehicle(unrelated) make sure you have the timing belt replaced every 80,000 miles or disastrous events will occur if the belt wears out,,,cost of new cylinder head and labour etc,,,$2,500 if you dont have this done in time.
My lady friend just had hers done after the belt snapped,,she almost fainted dead away when she got the bill from the garage,,the belt costs only $75 and about a hundred dollars to install,,,but the cost of engine damage is severe..

The clicking noise is most likely your compressor cycling on and off. It has a magnetic clutch that makes that noise.

It sounds like you have either a bad servo (or a vacuum leak) to the door that controls the temp of the air coming out.

Unless you're REALLY handy you will have to take it to the shop. The parts behind the dash are a pain to work on.

The clicking noise could be a problem with the fan. If something was blocking the way of it, or it isnt spinning properly it wouldnt blow cool air through and you would get nothing but hot pumping through your vents. This happened to me same as you are describing. I replaced the fan and cold air blew normally again.

the clicking might be the clutch on the compressor. if the freon is too high or low the compressor will cycle on and off a lot. when it is doing that the system cant remain constantly cool and if you car has a system that uses both hot and cold ta the same time you are getting the hot when the compressor os off and cool when it is on beacuse it is cycling. have the system checked by a reputable shop..............it should not be too expensive and dwhen they tell you what is wrong you can either fix it yourself or shop for a shop that will do it for a reasonable price

If the air gets hot when you are going up a hill and cold again when going down a hill or just cruising on a flat it is definately a vacuum problem. It would also turn hot when you are heavy on the throttle like passing someone.

Gerald S hit the nail right on the head. You've got a vacuum leak under heavy loads and it's switching the door flap in the vent system from hot to cold.

The clicking noise is the compressor clicking on and off which is normal. If you are positive that it is full of freon then you should have the compressor checked out

That may be the clutch. Believe it or not, there is a cluth on your a/c. Open the hood of your car and turn on the a/c. You can physically see and hear the clutch working. It will stop and go intermittently. That may be your noise and the problem.
