if you're going to RSA, you don't have to take any cash - just take your debit- er credticard.

I was there just 2 weeks ago, here's some prices:

when staying in hotels, you can always use your credit card. rates depend on wath you want: I payed between 100 ZRA (about usd 10) and 250 (usd 25) pppn for B&B.

restaurants: you get starters, main course, dessert and wine for about usd 20 pp

gas: between ZRA 6,60 and 6,90 - about usd 0,50 per litre. paying for gas is almost always in cash, but you can get cash in ATM almost everywhere.

enjoy your stay!!!!

The other websites provided will give you an idea of living costs in South Africa. Most international credit cards and debit cards are accepted in South Africa - there are MTNs everywhere. Travellers' cheques are also good, can be cashed in most cities.

Like in many other countries there are problems in South Africa but I deal with many international visitors on a regular basis (and I do not work in the tourist industry or for government) and none of them have had any problems with muggings, etc. That does not mean crime does not exist, obviously it does, but it means that you have to be careful, and vigilant (just as you need to be anywhere in the world), yet still make the most of your time out and about. Just come with an open mind and have a wonderful time in South Africa.

Get a south african friend who can tell you all that stuff. Anyways, get yourself a south african newspaper because they'll have those pamphlets on grocery prices. But it is fairly cheap. Petrol prices...not too sure on that one, we always got R100 of it. As for hotels, you'll have to find which hotel you'll want to go to. Check out google, they'll have something...

If you go, make sure you got to Cape Town!!
