Gosh no--I started when I was 8, but it's never too old to start! If you want to compete, I would certainly encourage it--even if you can just compete Level 4 (which I considere very easy to attain if you are a fast learner, dedicated, and have good form)--the hardest element is a roundoff, backhandspring.

For older new gymnasts, the most difficult part is usually building their strength. I would start building your arms (pushups) and stomach muscles (leg lifts on a bar or something that will build ALL your stomach muscles, not just your top ones (which are the most naturally strong, our laughing muscles, and the ones crunchers tone). If you really want to do gymnastics, there is no need for you to just watch from the sidelines--come join the fun!

It is kind of late. I did competitive gymnastics from age 7-17. However, if they have "natural ability", it's not too late. Competitive Gymnastics is VERY hard on the body and mind. I would talk to the coach and see their thoughts.
