He's getting older so he is calmer than when he was young. I have had hamsters that would sleep in my pocket, sleep in my lap and one that would go out with me in the car. It is normal I believe. He just really feels comfortable with you. Take good care of him and feed him only good hamster food, no human food. And keep his cage very clean. Plenty of fresh water too. I have had hamsters live to be 3 years old but they have short life spans compared to other animals.

What a sweet hamster! My hamster does that too, and the only person she has ever bitten was my sis. Hamsters, as you probably already know, don't live too long. When they get older, they seem to calm down and enjoy to cuddle and sleep more than running in a hamster ball for example. This is totally normal for an aging hammy.

This is normal. My hamster does that every day. She sleeps until eight and if you wake her up, she gets up at ten that night. Do not move its stuff back. Also, get it a hidey hole ASAP. For the fluffy stuff for nesting, don't use cotton because it can cause respiratory problems. I just use tissues or paper towels, they love to shred them and then use them for nesting. If you provide a hidey hole usually it will just sleep there. It's making its cage feel like home. Hamsters are nocturnal so they will sleep during the day. If you wake it up while it's sleeping this can strongly reduce their lifespan. Also, about the water bottle, if you have a good water bottle it will not leak and it will not get them wet. A few drips won't hurt them, and they know to cover themselves with bedding. About the bedding, you shouldn't use shavings if they're moving the bedding all day because it can cut their cheek pouches when they transport it. If they aren't transporting it, it's fine as long as the bedding is not pine or cedar which contain harmful oils (kiln-dried is okay). About picking it up, you should let it get used to its new home for at least two days before picking it up. For sexing, if they have, er, large reproductive parts when they are older, it is easier to determine the sex. When it gets comfortable, it will be chewing on the cage to get out, that is when you can try to let it out and put it into a hamster ball for exercise. They love to explore :) Just get it a hiding place for nesting (also protects against drips from the water bottle), don't use cotton for nesting, and change the bedding next time you clean the cage. Good luck!

Almost any animal has the ability to become very affectionate. I think this is very sweet! However, 2 years is guite a while for hamsters to live. You must have taken very good care of it. Pleases be aware that he may not live much longer- enjoy this while you can.

I used to have a hamster like that when I was a little kid, but he would only do those kinds of things with my dad. He'd lay on his back like a puppy and sleep, cuddle with my dad, curl up in his pocket, ect. Some hamsters are like that I guess.

Most hamsters get less and less high strung as they age - it's perfectly normal. The fact that it works for you and not your sister may have to do with how familiar he is with your smell or simply the way you handle him may make him more comfortable. Enjoy the quiet, cuddly twilight time with your little guy :)
