About their hymn: What did they do in the Halls of Montezuma and in the shores of Tripoli? And when? An where are the Halls of Montezuma?

the halls of montezuma is from the battle of chapultepec in the mexican-american war (the one before the american civil war where all the great leaders got their experience). The halls of montezuma are near present day mexico city. The shores of tripoli is from the first barbary wars in libya, (the first american war against muslims; barbary ==> where we get the word for barbarian) in the battle of derna, in order to protect american interests from the barbary pirates.

These are references to Historical battles in which the US Marines took part and assisted to victory.

The Halls of Montezuma refers to the Battle for Mexico City and the castle of Chapultepec in 1847.

Shores of Tripoli refer to the Barbary Pirate Wars in 1805. This is also where the Officers sword (Mameluke) is from. It was presented to Lt. Obannon after the war.

The marines landed with a small force and stopped pirates raiding the U.S. Merchant fleet in 1789 at Tripoli Libya, the Halls of Montezuma refer to the marines going into Montezuma Mexico and rescuing a number of Americans during the 1840's.
