Can someone explain to me the song for Santa fe and why they want to go?

They want to go to Santa Fe because they assume it will be a better place to live and give them a better life than in NYC.
Many communities in Santa Fe are known as being artsy, so it would be a good choice for them, and they could go there and still remain friends. Not only that, but they sing the song on Christmas day - while they are currently freezing. It has to be nice to think about the hot weather in Santa Fe!
Of course, Roger later realizes that Santa Fe isn't as idealic as they always pretended/dreamed it was. It doesn't stop them from seeing a reprise of the song, however, showing they are still wishing for a better place.
