For Alliance, I'd say go NE, because of the increased Dodge chance and shadowmeld. Horde, Trolls have increased bows skills, and Orcs have resist stun, so either would be a good choice,
As for a pet, a cat has the highest DPS, while a bear is a good tank, and wolves are a good all around pet.
Scorps are bad pets. Period. The dps and attack speed are bad, and the poisen isn't good enough to off set that.
I have never tamed a gorilla or croc, but a friend of mine loved his Sewer Beast pet, from SW.
If you want a pet that tanks, holds aggro, and does good dps, get an owl. The ones from Winterspring are esp. pretty =)
www.goodintentions.com (it might be goodintentionsguild or .net) has a list of the beasts you can tame, what they can learn, their special abilities, and a list of the top ten pets. Have fun and good luck!

Okay, if you're going horde, Orc is good because it gets bonuses to your pet attack damage and such. If you're going alliance take night elf because they get shadowmeld which can be useful.
For your pet, a scorpion is a good armored tank with moderate damage. I got a rare spawn in Mulgore called The Rake with one of the fastest attack speeds in the game (it's a cat). He works good, and Broken Tooth is probably the best speed attack cat in the game from the Badlands. I'd say crocodiles are useless.... gorillas are okay, but bears are better probably.

It depends if you're Alliance or Horde; if you're a Alliance, go with a Night Elf, but if you're Horde, go with an Orc (because they get a pet bonus). I'm not sure about the pet, though.

I prefer using Night Elf for hunter. Not exactly sure why, but I think it's easier than other races.
