I have an ibook, and I love it. it is light and easy to take with me anywhere. for something that needs alot of processing power, I'd try a top of the line PowerBook.

They're all good, even 2nd-hand ones that are a couple of years old (excellent way to save about a grand!) Even a 1.25GHz eMac might suit your needs, and will be cheaper than most other Macs.
You'll no doubt be wanting to use Photoshop to produce A3 or A2 size works so 1GB of RAM is a minimum, 2GB would be ideal; 120GB HD or larger for all those huge images, scans, and Photoshop files, and a DVD writer to back up all your work regularly - if the machine you have an eye on doesn't come with a SuperDrive (DVD burner) then buy an external firewire one, it will be easier to upgrade later and there are excellent deals to be had on eBay.
Mac Mini is tidy and easy to move (and steal) but may not provide enough in terms of expandability, though as a student you may find that a 2006 model will do for your needs for a couple of years, or until you can afford a more powerful machine.
I wouldn't recommend a laptop, they're theft targets, easy to break (drop or knock off a table edge), and more expensive for the same power and less expansion possibilities.
In my opinion you definitely do not need the latest whizz-bang machine, i.e. the Pro series (MacBook Pro, Mac Pro), they'll be far too expensive for a start, and remember that you're going to a place that probably has poor security (thieves may dwell within!)

As a graphic designer you'd need core power, good graphic engine and so on, so the best would be a newest Mac Pro. However, as you going to uni, and you need power and mobility as well, I'd recommend you Mac Book Pro laptop.

I wouldn't recommend using a Mac for graphic design(from my experience, at least), it just has way too many incompatibilities. I find even my old Dell with a P4 1.5GHz and Gforce3 is more useful than an iMac I used.
I suggest building your own PC with a nice dual-core processor (such as the Intel Core 2 Duo) and a good PCI-Express video card, and plenty of RAM(memory).
Furthermore, I HIGHLY recommend not getting a Macbook, iBook, or any other Mac laptop for graphic design.
However, if you're really interested in the OS X operating system, I suggest waiting for a bootcamp app or something that Apple's going to release for the PC.

Anyone with 1gb+ of ram, 128mb graphics card and a 100gb+ hdd should be fine. This will allow your computer to handle the graphic design and have space to store it.

I have been given a Macbook those days (my artwork will pay for it) and it extremely is super in each and every way, plenty greater perfect than the computing device laptop I used to have. the only concern is that i discover the demonstrate somewhat small. So easily get a Macbook professional in case you are able to handle to pay for it, because of the fact the demonstrate is plenty greater suitable. they're particularly heavier than the hassle-free Macbook however. in case you have become a basic Macbook get the bigger one.
