1st time my elderly parent broke his leg and I had to help him (1 day off). 2nd time my daughter had an asthma attack and had to go to the emergency room ( 1 day off). Two weeks ago I had a kidney and a bladder infection and missed a day. Then last night I started getting sick feelings similar to two weeks ago. I am very queasy today but am afraid to call off, even though I have personal and sick days. I have Friday off so could go to the doctor then, but since I have an underlying health condition I'm afraid to wait. What do you think?

I work retail. People are frequently sent home due to business being poor, so there is no need to replace my hours as we are ALWAYS overstaffed. My absence will not affect business one way or the other.

My absence won't affect business, but I just don't like the appearance of irresponsibility.

Well, when you go to work in a tiny store and there are 9 other employees milling around trying to look busy with no customers, and management is constantly telling everyone to "look busy", without actually having customers to sell to, then they end up sending half the employees home anyway, it's obvious that one person mising time because she's ill wouldn't affect business, except to save some payroll hours.

I work in a new concept store. Management had high hope for the store I work in but it is not performing as hoped. It seems the market that it was thought was here for our product does not exist. consequently, the company hired way too many people.

No, littlebunny, that's not possible. Retail doesn't work that way.

Do what you have to do to take care of yourself. Have you ever haer the saying "when it rains it pours"? Its pouring now. You can always find another job, but persoanl health and family are very important, too. If you have legitimate reason for being off, especially if its medically related, bring a doctors note in and give it to your supervisor. Thats a good way of covering your azz.

I think you are skating on thin ice. Employers get tired of hearing about all your emergencies and excuses for why you can't come to work. It gets old real fast.
When you have a family emergency, the thing to do is get it taken care of and then work the rest of the day unless you do some sort of shift work where a replacement came in.
When new employees have a lot of issues that prevent them from coming in to work, it gets noticed ... and not in a good way.
ok, I saw your update. If your "absence will not affect business one way or the other", then why are you "afraid to call off"?

Can you go to urgent care after work?
Also, in regards to your other absences...things happen to all of us and it's hard to balance things out. I have two toddlers and it seems like I'm out taking care of sick kids once a month.
I would talk to you manager and explain these things. I don't know what kind of job you have, but if you have the ability to work from home in the evenings to make up for some lost time during the day, you might consider offering to do that.

Same thing just happened to me today. Last Monday I had to take the day off to court, but I still made it to the office later that day. I started in March, two weeks after i got hired i had a doctors appointment and had to take the morning off. Last Friday I had to leave early for personal reasons. And Yesterday i had to leave early because i was feeling sick. So today I was feeling real bad, but here i am at work. I have a doctors appointment next Monday so I am going to ask for that day off.

Honestly, having been a Manager for a long time, I would consider you a risk and probably let you go before your three months probation are up. It seems terrible to do so, but I have to run a business and am not responsible for your family. Usually with the reason for your days off, I might consider to lengthen your probation for another month in which you would have to prove yourself to be a dependable employee.

If your absence doesn't matter then why were you hired?
Is it possible your employer schedules extra staff due to the fact he/she must account for frequent absence and the mentality of the employees that they are not needed and won't be missed if they miss a day?
Just food for thought.....

tell them the truth. Last thing you want to do is to get other people at the job sick. Just tell them you will make up the time and that you feel guilty about taking sick time and if they are even the least bit sympathetic they will understand.

It's Thursday, waiting one day isn't going to hurt. I would tough it out. Chances are if you are worried about missing too many days, then your coworkers are noticing as well. Maybe even your boss. Unless you are in dire pain, just wait until tomorrow.

Go to work, its only a day and a kidney bladder infection would immobilize you before it would become truly dangerous.
