I'm fed up of drawing the usual 'Flower and vase' combo that always tends to be so readily on offer at my house.
Any suggestions to what I could draw and then paint?

I've just finished art AS level but decided not to take it anymore as it was too much quantity and I felt I didn't have enough time to give my work as much quality as I could have.
So, after a break from art, I've now got that 'creative urge' to draw/paint etc

What do YOU really want to draw or paint? Don't think you can't paint what you actually would like to paint. Painting = struggling, and if there's no struggle it is all ready boring and not worthy to be called a painting. Just look to painters like Vincent van Gogh, he just struggled his whole life and that is what we see when we look at his paintings and what is so interesting about it.

Sounds like you like to draw from reality, rather than your imagination. Try cutting a small square hole or frame in some paper. Hold it at arms length and look around at your house - you may see things in a whole new way. Also try LEAVING the house. It's hard to get used to random people looking over your shoulder if your drawing in puplic, but you may find some inspriration out there in the world.

Draw a memory, maybe your first friend at school, maybe a day out that you had somewhere. This way you are not trying to copy, but painting from feelings which usually create a far greater truth.

I cannot do flowers to save my life, but I do like doing still life, and what I do, is go to bootsales and charity shops, and find stuff to group together and sketch or do a pastel, or water colour of?
Old cameras, baskets, pots, glass, anything that I can put to gether in a group and make a bit of a story???
Hope that helps - good luck

You can draw a side view of a woman then with her hair you can fade it to where it turnes into water, very easy to draw and very nice to look at, try it.

Do you study art or is it just a hobby? Go out and take lots of photos, of anything that interests you, then use them all to create a really exciting collage.

try drawing your hand as a start....the one that is not holding the pencil hoho....or a window or a chair or part of the rubbish in your bin or a pile of washing or the inside of a can of beans.....really what interests you, or if you are doing it to work on technique what will give you opportunities to challenge yourself with line, tone, texture etc

a bowl of things you like -- lemons. A bunch of stuff from your junk drawer. Grab a hand-full of ice cubes (draw fast). Take off your clothes and toss them in a pile... then draw them silly.

i draw my coworkers during lulls at my summer job... i find drawing people for practice is both challenging and interesting. Also altering them is fun too.. eg.. someones fingers fused into a keyboard etc
