It depends on the context, as well as who is speaking. Back in the pre-zipcode days, Calif was the accepted postal abbreviation. Now with machines that scan the zip code 100 times faster than any human, the accepted postal abbreviation, CA, is largely irrelevant. I may just try to send a letter without a state abbreviation at all, and I bet it makes it. As for the spoken word, we can go round and call names indefinitely. There seems to be a definite generation divide on this one. Personally, I abhor the use of Cali as an abbreviation for our state. But the younger generation has grown up with a lack of education, and many movies with dumb surfer types calling it "Cali". So they use it. It's cool and acceptable to the. Older folks, such as myself, prefer SoCal. Nobody's wrong here, so we can dispense with calling of names. Anyone who says that "most people" use one or the other can only speak for their own small peer group. A few years back, I discovered that "CJ's" refers to Carls Jr if you are younger, and Claim Jumper for the older set. Oh, if correctness is measured by your time in this state, that makes me more than twice as right as the poster who has been here 20 years. If you're on YA, you have to have a thick skin, and watch your words carefully. Groovy.
