Now they say you do not need anything for a crib. People use Bumper Pads only for decoration now a days. They used to use them because of kids getting there heads stuck. But the new cribs are designed now so that will not happen.

The alternative is to leave them out. And they're not a *SIDS* risk, they're a suffocation risk if baby were to get stuck under them.
Crib bumpers are used for 2 reasons--decoration and to prevent baby from getting a bump on the head. The risk of suffocation is theoretical only (no baby has ever been proven to have died of suffocation from bedding in her/his crib).

About a year ago I was looking for a bumper for my daughter's crib. I went to the Target website and there I found a mesh bumper. It's not padded at all, just mesh so if they're little faces get stuck against the wall, they're ok, they may end up with a little pattern on they're faces, but hey, at least they didn't suffocate! I can't tell you if they still sell it though.
I was just on the Target site and they still sell them - they're called Breathable Bumpers. Here's the link:

Don't use them, higher SIDS risk. I didn't use anything and my kids never got hurt. They may squish up to the bars but it is much safer without them. Avoid blankets in the crib for the first few months as well, just make sure they are dressed warm (one more layer of clothes than you feel comfortable in).
