I think he wants to respect his father. I don't think the number 3 will be used by any NASCAR racer again due to the tragic death of dale.

sigh..some simple search inquiries would cure this..
first, the #3 is owned by richard childress. so therefor, richard childress has the rights to the #3, and i would assume plans on keeping it. and since dale jr is under contract with dei.. he cna't just oops switch his number under his current ride.

second, the number is not retired and can't be retired until 5 people have driven it.. however, rcr can chose to never use it again.

with that being said richard childress has said that the only way he'll own it and let someone else use it is if it was little e in the car. there has been a lot of rumors, including words from dale jr's mouth that have alluded to the fact that towards the end of his career he will go to rcr and race the #3 car.. but he wants to help his dad's dreams of building a sucessful dei come true and win some before he leaves..that could change, and there are rumors about it.. but that's it.. RUMORS.. so until then. let's watch the red #8 on the track..

Richard Childress and NASCAR have the exclusive rights's to the number 3..It's highly doubtful anyone else ever use that number in nascar>>Dale Jr. races for DEI=Dale Erhnart Incorprated

If Dale Jr. would ever leave DEI and go to RCR it may happen, but not until then! The number wouldn't have anything to do with racing, just promotion!

Dale has said he would like to drive the 3 car later in his career. But he needs to work things out with Richard Childress and Teresa Earhardnt.

I know of a nurse that has a Junior tatoo but she did not get the number 8 but the "J R ' like the J R motorsports logo. Claimed because her husbands initials are JR is why she got it.

I think if Junior ever goes back to RCR, maybe he'll drive #3. But as long as he stays with DEI I think his number will stay #8.

I like his #8 -Its his own, not his dads. Some people already think he gets to much credit because of his dad. I think he is a great driver myself. He has had some bad luck this year, but he is a great driver
