Because they contents of the explosives discovered by the British police (thank God they're on the ball there) are liquid chemicals that when combined, combust and explode. Rather devastating in a pressurized cabin 3 miles in the air.

Try listening to NPR. It's all explained there. (That's National Public Radio for those of you who aren't aware the radio dial goes anywhere else)

Explosives can come in many forms - including liquid. The info received must of specified that the bomb was constructed in liquid form..

Airlines banned hand luggage on flights out of the United Kingdom and warned of severe delays at London airports after British police said they had foiled a plot to blow up aircraft mid-flight between Britain and the United States.

Because of what happened today, this morning. People are not allowed to take liquid products, because the terrorists were planning to take liquid explosive to blow up the planes. Liquid explosives are exactly what they sound like, explosives that are in liquid form.

Its all over the news that liquid explosive was to be taken on board several planes outbound from London to USA. The intention was to carry it in their hand luggage and cause the planes to simultaneously explode in midair causing many ppl to die. it was felt it would have outdone 9/11 if they'd pulled it off. Now there is high alert in London and all airports with delays and strict security.

A lot of explosives now come as a liquid - it also doesn't take that much explosive to burst a hole in the aeroplane's fuselage

The bomb the police suspected that could be used is made of of various liquids, that when mixed become highly explosive. Just add a flame (from a cigarette lighter etc) and that all they need
