They wanted Paul LoDuca and his gambling, adulterous ways.

Technically, the Mets didn't trade him but rather, they didn't resign him. The organization thought that Piazza was on a decline in his career, giving the fact that older catcher tends to be less productive with all the wear and tear of playing catcher. You have to remember that catchers kneel down half the time during the game to catch pitches and it's dangerous if that catcher gets hit by a bat, whether it's a foul ball or trying to pick off a base stealer. Piazza is a defensive liability and the Mets didn't want him to play only a quarter to half a season with the high contract demand that Piazza wanted, so he went to San Diego instead and the Mets got a cheaper and younger source by acquiring Paul Lo Duca from the Marlins via "fire sale".

A couple reasons...one was to free up some salary, so they could lock in guys like Beltran, Delgado, Wright & Reyes to longer deals.
Also, he is not a very good catcher...LoDuca is a much better defensive catcher...the Mets had more than enough power to make up for losing Piazza...so they felt they could part ways with him and use the money elsewhere.

because the Mets heard about Piazza's affair with a prominent real esate giant, Elvira Gablroney. This black widow had seduced her fair share of prominent New York bachelors and all had met their doom. The Mets front office most likely saved Piazza's life.

they didn't trade him. they simply didn't resign him because he wasn't worth his salary. they also took full advantage of florida's firesale in getting Paul Lo Duca.
Piazza may still be an above average hitter in the catching position, but he's **** on defense. He can't throw a runner out to save his life. He should have gone to the AL and become a DH. Don't expect the Padres to resign him after this year.

They didn't trade him. His contract ran out after the 2005 season and the San Diego Padres signed him as a free agent.

I read this in a New York newspaper:
Mike had told the Mets he was thinking of retiring at the end of last year... so instead of waiting to see if he did or not... they did not sign him so they wouldn't have to worry about his salary!! And then he was picked up as a free agent

Maybe because their payroll couldn't countenance a high dollar catcher with mediocre (at best) defensive skills. Yeah, he could hit, but he's getting old.
