I have a cream rug, which I love, but it doesn't fit in the washing machine, and it has a few old marks on it - dirt mainly I think, though possibly a drop or two of red wine as well! Are there any products I can use / ways of cleaning it to bring it up a bit nicer?

I worked as a carpet cleaner, if it's just dirt put some washing up liquid in a basin. Stir it up so it soapy and scoop thefoamonto marks leave for 15 mins then wipe with damp cloth. If it is wine, soft drinks ie cola , irn bru these are dye marks and will need a professional cleaner even then they may not come out.

Glad to help, hope your lucky!

If it is washable, put it in the bath with a good detergent or cleaning solution and walk up and down on it. Rinse several times using the same technique.
Beware of putting too much detergent in and make sure that you don't fall over or slip while you are doing it.
The hardest thing is to get the rug to the washing line while it is soaking wet! If you have a baby bath or something similar it would help to stop it dripping all over the place and don't forget that with all that water, it will be heavy.
It the stains are old, though, the chances are they won't come out - especially the red wine.
If you really like the rug take it to a specialist cleaner - though it might be more economical to go to a good carpet company and see if they can match it. If it still has labels on the back they should at least be able to find out if it is made anymore.

I have used Vanish Oxi - Action Spray on an old Chinese Rug that I have, and it does seem to remove most stains, including some old ones, but not all. So it is worth trying this first.
If this doesn't work, then the suggestion made by the person before me is a good one - hire a steam cleaner.
Hope this helps:>)

It's going to be hell trying to do it yourself...Surprisingly the dry cleaners can handle it as well. I've taken my comforter and rugs to the dry cleaners...It may cost you like 35 bucks, more or less depending on how deep the stain is...Good luck

Then hos it off.
Flip it over anf rinse it well. too.
Hang it up to dry, but dont leave it in the sun too long or it may fade.
