I would say Episode II, since that is the one with the most lightsaber action. It takes place during the hey-day of the Jedi, and the action is something a little kid will like even if they don't "get" the story. Episode VI maybe as well, again for action and the little fuzzy Ewoks. All tht deep, "Luke, I am your father." business is a little much for a lil' tyke.
By the way - in "chronological order" by release date, the whole series wouldn't make as much sense to anyone anyway!

I am disappointed to say that they prefer the new ones. My little brother and his friend are star wars crazy, they know everything about it. He is nine and has loved them since he was about 5.
His favourite is episode 2. He watched all of the original films before he saw the new ones, yet still he prefers the new ones! I can only say I tried! Out of the original films his favourite is return of the Jedi, which is my favourite too.

That's child cruelty, surely! I dare to hope that even a child of today would have the good taste to recognise that "Star Wars" is the best of a generally bad bunch. (I refuse to call it "Episode IV: A New Hope" or whatever George Lucas is rebranding it this week, just as I refuse to call "Raiders of the Lost Ark" "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark".) I'm sure the poor kiddies you were subjecting to this experiment would have lost the will to live by the time they got to the fourth installment though...

A 10 year old would say Episode 3 because it's the best movie with the best technology combination. They would find episode 4-6 to be too cheesie with the special effects to take those movie's seriously. I know several 10-12 year old kids that already agree with me.

They'd relate o Episode I: The Phantom Menace, as it involves a young boy who goes in a big space adventure. Similar story you get in some kids books, although it has diffferent interpretations for older people.

Definitely RETURN OF THE JEDI. It's not as dark and gloomy. There is some happy music and most importantly....EWOKS!
Kids can't resist those cute and furry little guys. That's why I loved it in 1983 and I was 8 years old then.

A child would pick episode 1. But we all know that children are thick & shouldn't be allowed to form their own opinions untill they are old enough to buy you a beer.
(Empire Strikes Back is the best)

Probably episode 1: there's a kid and they'd probably like Jar Jar
Or episode 6: teddy-like Ewoks and a really happy ending!

The one where Ani is a little boy. All children identify with other children.
As for action? Probably the second one where Ani fights the Sith.
