If your laptop works and your camera doesn't, but a new camera and then when you can afford it, but a new laptop.

If you can afford it and do a lot of shooting, get them both. The Cannon is a great choice...low price and the 12X optical is awesome. You can get details on the shots you can't even see with the naked eye (I shot some sea lions on a rock that I could hear barking but couldn't even see, and when I uploaded it to the laptop they were clear as a bell!).

Use the viewfinder not the LCD and you can shoot over a gig of images on 4 AA batteries. Don't use the interface cable for uploading to the laptop. You can get an SD adapter for $5-$6 and it will act just like a stick. This also saves a TON of battery life since you are not using any camera electronics as part of the upload. And even cooler...no proprietary software for this. They upload as simple old JPEG's.

But for the laptop? Go with Toshiba all the way! I have a friend who works for a software training company. She travels a lot and sets up class rooms. they had about a third Compaq, a third Dell, and a third Toshibas. The Compaq's bit the dust firts, they lost the Dells second and the Toshibas never failed. I got a low-end Toshiba, took it on a two-month van-camping trip used the crap out of it, and it just smiles back at me a purrs.
