The Crusades were a response to JIHADIST aggression to take over Jewish and Christian holy sites that began in the 700s. (Islam is only 1400 years old but has waged Jihad since its inception).

The Crusades ended after only 170 years but Jihad has continued, unabated.

Muslims have occupied the Christian city of Constantinople since 1453, they converted the Greek Orthodox Church, Hagia Sophia, into a mosque.

Many religions abandoned war in God's name hundreds of years ago - but Islam has not changed in 1,400 years.

Sigh..
Just look how this thoughful question brings out the apologist morons that learned history from watching a hollywood muslim love-in like "Kingdom of Heaven"...

First of all.. the crusades were not started by Christians as an offensive conflict, but rather as a defensive conflict

1. The Crusades were not acts of unprovoked agrgression by Europe against the islamic world, but were a delayed response to CENTURIES of muslim agression which gre fiercer than ever in the 11th century .
A few examples:

* Early in the 8th century, 60 christian pilgrims from Amorium were crucified by muslim raiders.
* Around the same time, a Muslim governer of Cesarea seized another group of pilgrims from Iconium and all executed as spies, except for a small number that converted to ISLAM!
*Later Brutal subordination and violence became the rule of the day for Christians in the Holy Land.
*In 772 The caliph al mansur ordered the hands of Christians and Jews to be stamped with a distinctive symbol (nazi's would use the same tactic on their persecution of jews and all perceived enemies or undesirables).
789-Muslims behead a monk who had converted from Islam, and then they plunder the Bethlehem Monastery of St. Theodosius, killing many more monks.
by 937 Muslims had destroyed many monasteries destroyed in jerusalem, as well the famous Church of the Calvary and the Church of the Resurrection.

2. Finally, by this time, it was the Byzantines who had enough, and moved from a defensive policy to a offensive policy, recapturing, Crete, Cicilia, Cyprus, parts of Syria and even the ancient christian city of Antioch. - These were wars for the recapture of christian lands* and the defense of christians, NOT religous imperialism(* 2/3 of which had formerly been the christian world - CENTURIES before the crusades).

3. In Islamic theology, if any land ever belonged to the house of Islam, it belongs FOREVER, and muslims must wage war to regain control over it!
That is why in 974 the Sunni Caliph; Abbasid, declares Jihad..Starting yearly campaigns of holy war against the christians. Which further steamrolled into more and more bloodshed and division.

Ofcourse, not every euro crusaders motives were pure. More than once, many fell from the ideals of the christian pilgrims. But the dogma that the crusades were unprovoked, imperialist actions against the peaceful, indigenous Muslim population is simply historically innaccurate and reflects distase for western civilzation rather genuine historical research.

I have 0 clue what you mean about a lasting Jihad. All I do know is the Crusades are a blemish on the Christian religion and should never be looked at as being miniscule.

Any time a Christian is killing behind his belief in Christianity he should be hit with a book in the head. What happened in the Crusades were disgusting and very chilling and the rich culture of the Middle East has never forgotten it.

Muslims of today are still in fear that the modern Christian nations are still waging a crusade.

This fear is only instigated further when Bush declared while being in a church that he would be waging a "crusade" against terrorism.

These words that back drop brought back that fear.

1400 years ? The Arabs have been fighting someone for over 5000 years! Their attitude of convert or die has so poisoned their culture it may not be possible to EVER quell their blood-lust. Islam may be only 1400 years old but the Arab attitude has been there all along.

Once the Arabs were a great fighting force but all the centuries of endless fighting has taken a toll on the Arabs. They had a magnificent culture in ancient Egypt, the fighting has reduced the Arabs to herds of sheep that blindly follow any Arab that spews enough hate speech.

Arabs believe now that none of the problems are their fault. The killing is justified because they have been persecuted. Look at how they claim being mistreated after they nationalized the oil fields Americans found and built. They get trillions for the oil and it's never enough.

Nothing is good enough, meet their demands and new ones surface immediately! They're never satisfied, everything wouldn't be enough. The problem may not be solvable!

I didn't know that. Cause it isn't true. The first Crusade - Emperor Alexius called for defence of the Byzantine Empire from Turks. When the Crusaders reached Jerusalem they MASSACRED the population, Jews, Christians, nobody was spared. The fourth Crusade - Constantinople was sacked, which had a high Jewish and Christain population Albigensian Crusade - Launched against the "heretical" Cathars in France, who were a Christian sect Crusades in the Baltic - Launched to forcibly convert the Scandinavian peoples to Christianity As a cause of the crusades massacres of Jews occured right across western europe, from Germany to England, the latter expelling Jews until the 17th century. The Crusades are held in contempt by people of Orthodox Christian faith, as when Constantinople was sacked, many Orthodox relics and treasures were stolen by the Vatican, where they still reside today. So a little less anti-Islamic propaganda, if that's ok

Yes, long before the First Crusade, Mohammed himself launched the first Jihad. The fought all the way across North Africa and into Spain. The Moors (now called Morrocans) ruled Spain for about 400 years.

They tried to take the rest of Europe. Had not Charles Martel and his forces won the Battle of Tours, we might all be speaking Arabic, and women would be chattel for the most part.

Islam was founded on the notion of violence. Before the first Jihad, Mohammed's battles were fought to "unify" the Arab tribes. Violence is a means to an end within Islam.

On the subject of women, all we need really remember is that Mohammed himself had a 9-year-old wife.

Islam is not a religion of peace. It is a sugar coated poison of a hateful and murderous tenet..
How can they call murderers, martyrs? The true role model of a martyr is Christ, who was crucified for our sins.
I do not know what kind of a god is their Allah? A true God does not condone killing, for the True God is a
Creator, is a giver of life and a healer. True God is love, not hate.
It seems their God loves to kill and destroy because he did not create people and the world we live in. They pray five times a day, they do not work, and after their prayer sessions they think of killing one another (Sunnis and Shiites) and most especailly killing Christians and none believers of their religion. It seems if you are not one of them, you are a piece of a manure.
When their Imams declare a "fatwah" they command as if they had a part in the creation of man, or even in the small action of nurturing their fellowmen. They forget they are but just a creature of God too. They behave as if they created their fellowmen and that they have the right to kill them all at will, just because they are not agreeable to their religion or their beliefs.
Christ said, "He who says he loves God, but hates his brother or neighbor is a liar. And Satan, is the father of all lies."

And guess who, branded Christ as the original infidel? Yes, it was Mohammed, a man who never passed his carnal tests, he, who never performed at least one miracle in his life, he, who also a carried a scimitar to kill and intimidate others to be converted to his religion. He was nothing but a self proclaimed prophet who claims the archangel Gabriel appeared to him. ( Remember, the devil can come and still pretend to be an angel of God. This also happened to Joseph Smith of the Mormons, who also is a polygamist.) Mohammed was a man who came 700 years after Christ and twisted all the good teachings of Our Lord. He knew the teachings of Christ. How can a polygamist (he knew this) with four wives and numerous concubines be holy and be worthy of the title "the ultimate prophet" of the Almighty God? Is God himself has a twisted mind to choose such a man to be His 'ultimate prophet '?

Mohammed was nothing but a piece of carcass dropped in a well of spring water to poison so many innocent and intimidated minds, hearts and souls. And they capitalized on his idea of being a holy man, because religion is big business and a real good system of making people submit to his imposing will. If you questioned him or doubted his teachings, he would cut your head off. I truly think he is the Anti-Christ who existed in the years circa 660 and beyond.

Let us all pray for all Muslims to see the true light and the true path to salvation after life.

The after life, has no more sexes or genders for we all become spirits with no more physical bodies. There are no 70 virgins waiting after killing other people and for committing suicide. There could be only 70 devils and the fires of hell waiting.

If you take Jihad to mean the attempt for Islam to become the world's predominate religion, then hasn't Christianity been doing the same thing since Christ died?

"Be fruitful..."

Yes, I knew these historical facts. Makes one wonder why Bush-haters cannot see the danger of these people having nuclear weapons.
