In the 1990s' Nirvana killed the hair band. Although a lot of people don't like their music, their song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was herald as the new age of music for the 1990s. From them bands (that were already around) were able to receive much more light - and literally, overnight, 1980s' hair bands were out the door and "alternative" music such as Pearl Jam became the mainstream music.

Nirvana has received almost all #1 "most influential" band awards - only beaten by the Beatles, Elvis, and Pink Floyd.

For 2000? I don't know, I haven't kep track of music past 99 ;*( I'm getting too old

even though U2 started in the late 70s/early 80s, they have inspired many many new artists of today. some examples are the Killers and Dashboard Confessional, who openly say that they draw influences from U2 (especially since they opened for U2 during their recenty Vertigo tour).
U2 has also won the most Grammys ever for an artist (with 22) and most of them were in this decade

People say Nirvana, but I don't think so...I'd say RATM or No Doubt.
