The pay scale is lower, and the price of housing through the roof. An apartment in Tampa / Orlando costs more than an apartment in Phoenix.
If you're selling a house in NY, you MAY have enough equity to buy something down here.
You don't need a college education, but the trades are NOT well paid down here. It is NOT cheaper to live in Florida. You don't pay as much for heating, but you make up for that in cooling costs. You may think you can take the heat...but not with the humidity. We may not have a state income tax, but they have "hidden" taxes that drive the price of everything through the ceiling...and whatever fruits, veggies and meat you like...eat it there, because it's tasteless down here.
I'm looking to LEAVE Florida.

If you can survive in NY without a college education then I think you can survive anywhere. I've wanted to move to FL my entire life and I never did it. Now I'm 32, married and a parent with "roots" in Michigan. My Florida dream will never be a reality. ( I do have quite a nice life & job up here though, but I dream about palm trees)
Worse case is you get there and try it out for a few months and you have to move back.
My advice is apply to a few colleges in FL, get a job on campus, take out some loans, apply for some schlorships and see what living there is really like. Then you'll get your college education that will help you where ever you are and you'll get the palm trees and sunshine too. Private Universities won't charge you more for not being a resident and they typically offer more schlorship money too. (After a year apply to be a Residence Assistant and you'll get free Room & Board)
Good Luck, I say go before you get "roots."

I use to live in Florida & now live in Ohio. Florida is the worst pay & has some of the worst job markets. It's also more expensive to live there than anywhere else.
My husband is a juvenile correctional officer with 3 degrees. When we lived in Florida he was making $8.50 hr., we moved to Ohio & he is doing the same work for $16.00 & I don't have to work like I did when we lived in Florida cause it's cheaper to live up here. When we were both working & living in Florida, we were living paycheck to paycheck....not anymore.
Florida is also getting crowded. They say that move than 2,000 families move to Florida each year. I love to visit & I do miss living there, but I'm more happy where I'm at now.

I moved from Upstate massive apple to Miami after I graduated highschool... I loved FLORIDA! you may't beat sitting on a sea coast contained in the middle of December and wondering... hmm... i'm satisfied i'm no longer stuck in that freak snowfall up north! I moved from Miami to Orlando after college and loved Orlando even extra! there is continually a lot of issues to do, tremendous interior reach places that a tremendous variety of travelers do not study and the elements is rather a lot continually good! warm certain, humid definately, moist now and again. yet universal that is an outstanding position! i'd not propose Sanford in spite of the undeniable fact that. it is a touch trashy. The closer you get to Orlando, the nicer it is! good success!

The pay in Florida is poor. They say you make it up in sunshine. I would contact Bright House as one person suggested and see if they have any openings and how much they would pay. Check out apt costs on www.craigslist.org. The college tuition here is low if you live here a year and become a resident.

That is something that you and you alone (or mostly you alone) should decide. You could get reports but they might be biased. If... IF you had friends there, you might ask them in order to get the BEST information..But.. in any move.. I strongly.... STRONGLY advise going there and living for a week or so to get a feel for some of the questions you have in mind.
