Probably from the fact that fishermen's wives often were in charge of selling the catch in the market..They'd call out loudly to attract buyers.

It means a fisherman's wife or a woman who sells fish. Usually it implies someone loud, and coarse, and nagging.
I think it is from England.
I use this in a sentence all the time. "I get my nails done, so I don't feel like a fishwife."
