The Spitfire designed by R.J. Mitchell was our most effective fighter aircraft during the Battle of Britain. Although in terms of numbers of aircraft in service and numbers of victories it was outshone by the Hurricane. Through a process of continual development the Spitfire was able to remain in frontline sevice throughout the war.

The Mustang (once united with a licence built version of the Merlin engine) was the first high performance fighter with a long enough range to be able to protect the American 8th Air Force bomber fleets on their daylight raids on Germany. The air cover provided by the Mustang, Thuderbolt and Lightning fighters helped keep the bomber losses on these raids to a sustainable level, thus allowing the German arms factories to be bombed frequently and acurately.

Therefore the Spitfire helped to prevent the Germans gaining the air superiority that they would need in order to consider invading Britain. Whilst the Mustang ensured the air superiority required in order to destroy the German war machine.

North American P-51D Mustang Aircraft
P-51D Mustang

The P-51 Mustang, originally designed by North American Aviation for the British RAF, proved itself in combat when it was reconfigured with a Rolls Royce Merlin engine. The upgraded configuration allowed for greater speed and a higher ceiling making it eligible for more combat roles.

In 1943, the P-51B entered combat over Europe escorting B-17 and B-24 bombers. The Mustang proved impressive in their combat role as an escort fighter, dominating German interceptors on many runs. Eventually the P-51 Mustang served in most combat theaters becoming a big factor in the dominance of the skies.

Through all of World War II and several years afterward, the Spitfire proved itself in combat as well as endearing itself to every man, woman and child who ever laid eyes on it. Not suprisingly, when the Spitfire was phased out of military service it became the prized possession for pilots around the globe. Air Marshals, test pilots, captains of industry, movie stars, and aircraft enthusiasts of all ages have fallen hopelessly under its spell for sixty-five years. More than any other aircraft in existence, the sight or sound of a Spitfire will stop any pilot in their tracks, their eyes thrust into the sky to see its shape, their ears yearning to feel the thunder of twelve cylinders at full song, their spirits transported back to the skies over Europe when the fate of the world hung in the balance.

Was WW2 the theme for this year's show?

Did the flower show have something to do with 'Digging for
Britain' where everybody (not actively fighting the war) and, had access to a plot of land, cultivated fruit/vegetable crops during WW2?

Both aircraft made major contributions to winning WW2.

By the way - Where is Shrewsbury?

The Spitfire and Mustang fighter airplanes were the U.K and U.S. single-man aircraft that succeeded in winning the air war known as the "Battle of Britain" in 1940.

Daily air duels of fighters vs. German bomber groups took place over most of the U.K. - if not for the superior speed and maneuverability of these aircraft, Germany would of achieved air superiority and possibly invaded England before the USA and allies could mount the D-Day invasion of France.

The question of overall performance is a no longer undemanding one to define, as a results of fact 2 planes can the two be greater helpful and worse than one yet another finding on which standards you're finding at. you may evaluate planes according to roll value, turn rates (instantaneous and sustained), climb value, dive acceleration and speed, skill loading, extreme altitude overall performance, low altitude overall performance, etc... it extremely isn't any longer undemanding to p.c.. the main dazzling ones to declare which airplane is genuinely greater helpful than yet another primary. as an occasion, if the enemy can fly, climb, or dive speedier than you, you may no longer be waiting to interact them in a turning combat as a results of fact they'll basically fly away speedier than you may save up, so whether your airplane is greater desirable at turning you will be able to hardly get the possibility to hire that benefit. you may take a given concern and deduce which airplane could have the ease. yet various situations it extremely is the pilot that at last ends up making the adaptation. an dazzling pilot interior the weaker airplane or a mistake by utilising the pilot of the greater helpful airplane could turn issues around. additionally, if pilots have been knowledgeable to hire the specific reward of their airplane they could develop into plenty greater efficient. those are so important, that the two factors studied the enemy's airplane and specific procedures have been stepped forward to defeat specific forms of airplane. as an occasion, it replaced into primary that stepping into a dogfight with a eastern 0 replaced right into a risky flow, and attempting to climb to avert a P-38 replaced into in all threat no longer the main dazzling factor to do. The P-51 Mustang is typically referred to as between the final planes of the conflict as a results of fact its features have been an intensive to appropriate tournament for the function wherein it replaced into used. The overall performance stability replaced into basically suitable for being waiting to bypass the long distances needed and nonetheless be waiting to hold its very own, and at contemporary outperform in lots of respects, the enemies it encountered. Many planes have been in any different case great, yet oftentimes could no longer carry out nicely on the job that replaced into required as a results of fact their designed favored one factor on the compromise of others. as an occasion, the Spitfire and BF109 are the two touted as being exceedingly reliable at maneuvering battling, yet their short variety constrained their usefulness at missions like escorting bombers.
