Terrible in English means Terrible in French. It's also the same in Spanish. It certainly doesn't mean "great."

I think your friend was pulling your leg.

that is wrong. Many French word are not really translated at all just added to the language with a slight variation in spelling and pronunciation. its all good as long as we understand each other.

but the french, you say it like, te-REE-blugh
like that.

what, you wanna say it to somebody or something? Learning french? Learn french. Then you can tell your mate something like "Ta guele", and say it means "strawberry" or something.
