What's essential, for those who make that rule, is that you remain very afraid and that you remember that "your government will protect you" (to quote George Bush). They underscore this by giving you ambiguous, vague instructions, like "essential travel" so that you will be inconvenienced and frustrated. This will remind you that you are under a threat, and that you need to give up some of your liberties, like travelling whenever you want, and many more to come. Today is only "essential travel", and maybe tomorrow only "essential people" can travel, and who knows what next...

I'm supposed to be going to Berlin on Sunday for a two week language course for work.
It's essential for my work, but not worth risking my life for. I should think it will be fine now though - the next few weeks will probably be some of the safest ever to travel as the airports will be on critical alert.
Besides, flights to Germany should be ok. Unlike us they haven't joined the US in any little invasions into Arab countries Bush has felt like making.

well.. The attack in London was unpredictable, so by most people who bought their tickets ahead of time, they had to get from point A to point B... The newcommers that show up, are advised to step back... My mom is supposed to come from Europe, and she got caught in the events, on her way... for her the alert is too late, she has to make it here, she's already past the customs, so she'll make it, the rest that want to plan a trip, this is a bad time. She needs to get home here.. so that's a must. Read about the events here. http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/08/10/us.security/index.html

Common Sense - Could you survive without making the flight?
If you have to fly off somewhere for surgery, or to see a dying loved one or something else that won't wait and that you won't get the chance to repeat if you miss it.
Holidays must be awful to cancel/postpone, but is a trip to the beach really worth risking your life if an attack is iminent?

This means if you are willing to take the chance that somethimg may happen to the plane while you are on it then go ahead and fly. If you are able to delt the flight until more information is found anout the situation then it may be in your best interest to do that. What ever you want to do in other words.

You do!
That's the whole point - decide your own priorities after weighing up the inconvenience factor
