A jpeg is a compressed picture format. If you want sharp images, avoid jpeg because anytime you resize or edit the picture, it lowers the quality of the picture. It is a compress format, and each edit recompresses the file reducing quality.
PDF is a document format. It is intended for text documents, not for pictures. But you can put picures into a PDF. The quality of the PDF will be the same as the original picture. Because you can not edit a PDF, with quality of the picture will remain consistant, but you will not be able to edit it without copying it out of the PDF format and back into a pciture format (such as jpeg). Because it is intended for text, not pictures, it is like framing a picture. It increasing the file size and makes it hard to work with.
If you want to keep the image sharp, use bmp instead of either jpeg or PDF. The file size will be larger, but so will the quality of the picture.

JPEG is a compressed image file that can be opened, viewed, and edited by a variety of programs on different computing platforms. PDF files are compressed image files that are specifically designed to be easily opened and viewed on as many computer systems as possible, but they are usually not designed to be edited. PDF and JPEG files can come in sizes and resolutions that vary from a few kilobytes to hundreds of megabytes so there's no definite "better" choice. The quality of the original image is the only determining factor of whether or not it's advertising quality. You're better off going to whoever will be printing or handling your advertisement and asking them what image format they prefer.

1) JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is an ISO/IEC group of experts that develops and maintains standards for a suite of compression algorithms for computer image files.
2) JPEG (usually pronounced JAY-pehg) is also a term for any graphic image file produced by using a JPEG standard. A JPEG file is created by choosing from a range of compression qualities (actually, from one of a suite of compression algorithms). When you create a JPEG or convert an image from another format to a JPEG, you are asked to specify the quality of image you want. Since the highest quality results in the largest file, you can make a trade-off between image quality and file size. Formally, the JPEG file format is specified in ISO standard 10918. The JPEG scheme includes 29 distinct coding processes although a JPEG implementor may not use them all.
Together with the Graphic Interchange Format (GIF) and Portable Network Graphics (PNG) file formats, the JPEG is one of the image file formats supported on the World Wide Web, usually with the file suffix of ".jpg". You can create a progressive JPEG that is similar to an interlaced GIF.
PDF stands for Portable Document Format. It's a distribution format developed by Adobe Corporation to allow electronic information to be transferred between various types of computers. The software which allows this transfer is called Acrobat. In order to view and print a PDF file you will first need to download and install a copy of the Adobe Acrobat Reader
Now If you're deciding what format is best to store and search your company’s documents and images, I recommend that you create a PDF. If you're already storing documents in TIFF or JPEG, you should utilize a user friendly PDF compression and conversion software to convert them into PDFs. Then you can take advantage of the benefits that super-compressed PDFs have to offer.

JPEG (Joint Photography Experts Group) is a compressed image format, often used for photographic images. The extension can be .jpg or .jpeg .
PDF is a universal file format that preserves the fonts, formatting, colors, and graphics of any source document, regardless of the application and platform used to create it. PDF is the open de facto standard for distributing formatted documents over the Internet. PDF files are compact and can be shared, viewed, navigated, and printed using free Adobe Acrobat® Reader® software
For adverstising, I would recommend to use PDF because it allows you to link or embbed jpeg and another image formats plus it's universal.

For both cases, you could preserved sharp image as long the original is high res and you do not down-sampled it when you convert the file. For advertising purposes, do you mean by just sharing the data or to send it into print production?
If it need to go into print production direct, PDF (need to convert in accordance to printer's production standard) is the current market trend. However if you just need to send say a product packshot to an ad agency to use it to create an ad, then please go for jpeg.

this is like comparing apples & oranges, PDF is just a common format for documents, saving the jpeg in PDF format is like framing a picture, when all you really need is the picture itself...
jpeg is compressed imaged (the creater can determine the compression ratio), but the image itself when saved in high resolution. For your purpose, i would say just get the jpeg.

Thank you so much for posting this. I am a former Catholic that is seriously looking into 'coming home' to Rome. One of the key reasons is the complete ignorance of Church history and the faith of the Church Fathers that I have found displayed in the non-Catholic Christian community. Veneration of the saints can be shown from the beginnings of Christianity and is completely in keeping with Christian faith and tradition. The most frustrating thing I have encountered however is the complete refusal to accept that there may be more to Christianity than the Bible (and in most cases a version of the Bible that is missing 7 books!). I told a good friend of mine that he was wrong about some Catholic beliefs and that I could give him a copy of the catechism if he wanted to learn the truth - his response - "the Bible is good enough for me" - of course at the following Bible study it was fine to use a commentary.... because it agreed with his pre-conceived ideas. Anyway thank you again and in answer to the question. Nothing is difficult about it at all - if one isn't close minded.

Jpeg is exclusively for images.
pdf is for creating documents which may contain images.
Jpeg/JPG is always better if you need images.
