Well, are you meeting someone in Salonika? If yes, he/ she will know! If not, you can ask for tour through your hotel. Chalkidiki has super places, even the most ancient human remains have been discovered in an hour drive from Salonika (cave in Petralona). Also, within an hour, or so, driving distance are Pella the capital of Alexandre's empire; Veroia, Edessa with her Falls, ...
Also, in less than two hours you get close to Mt. Olympus and you might walk on the Mt of goddesses and gods! There is Dion with ancient and Hellenistic ruins, etc.
Also, Paralia of Katerini is a place many tourists are enjoying!
How many days are you staying? In case you need advices for more places!

Thessaloniki(Salonica) - Athens is a long distance. It's about 5 hours driving by car and 1 hour by plane.
I suggest you to stay in Thessaloniki if you don't have something specific to do in Athens.
I live to Athens but I visited Thessaloniki on June, it was great. Except White Tower (Lefko Pyrgo) there are a lot of Byzantine monuments which are unique as the Rotonda etc.
Thessaloniki has also a great nightlife and Halkidiki is also very close where you can find magnificent seas and beaches.
There are also other cities close to Thessaloniki(which is the capital of the prefecture which is called Makedonia), like Kavala (really great and beautiful) or you can go to Vergina if you like archeology and history (Alexander the Great etc.) or you can visit Stagira in Halkidiki where Aristotle was born.
There are a lot of things you can do in Makedonia(North Greece) that I can not write them all here. You should better buy a touristic guide and choose what you prefer.
Athens is in South Greece and you'd better visit it some other time (because there are a lot of things to do there too like visiting the islands).
Have a nice time to Greece!!!

Thesaloniki is in north Greece, Athens is in south, it depends whats your interest to propose you some monuments. The most famous is White Tower in Thesaloniki and Acropolis in Athens, between they are many seesights to see, from clear beaches to long mountains, a travel guide or an advise from locals will help. Yes most of Greeks speak english, especially new generation. Enjoy the trip!.
