The biggest you can afford dependant to the budget you have. Small ones die easily and have a shorter life span due to heart size. Easy point - the bigger the fish the longer it will live. - They are also easier to look after as you will not have big schools of TETRA fish etc swimming around messing things up in your nitrate system. AND on a finishing note - it is more personalised with the behaviour of your fish to have only a few llarge ones as there is no schooling and they will come to you when you go near the tank to ask you to feed them. I have had large OSCAR and BARAMUNDI fish before that I would feed by hand and I now have a SARATOGA which also loves hand feeding.
Hope this helps.

it really depends on the tank size. you first have to decide whether you want saltwater or freshwater. if you are novice you might want to start with freshwater tropical fish as saltwater aquariums can be costly and you can lose a ton of money if you don't know what you are doing. make sure your tank is set up for a while first with no fish and add just 2-3 fish at a time and don't over crowd your tank or you will just have to a disaster and will constantly have to replace your fish. i am a novice myself and have successfully set up a 55 gallon tank with many varieties of barbs, sharks, silver dollars and have a couple of parrot cichlids. these are semi aggressive fish and you should also keep community fish with community fish etc.

I suggest that you get a Beta fish, because 1st of all they are pretty easy to take care of and 2nd of all they are very pretty. So they would look nice and elegant where ever you put it.

I think that you should get a easy fish to handle, like coldwater fish,

then freshwater, then saltwaterfish, then tropical

.I best recommend for you to start with, goldfish, because they are easiest to take care of.
Marigold

you should get a striped catfish. they are small, easy to take care of, and pretty much ignore all other fish in your tank. if you really want to, you could get a spotted catfish, but i like striped better. or a flying fox. they eat your tank's alge so you don't need to get a snail to clean it. but only get one, because they are agressive twoards there own species

If you're a beginner, then get bettas. They're less demanding than any other fish.

for a small tank like a 20 gallon long, I'd go with a pair of small cichlids, such as rainbow cichlids (Herotilapia) or Convicts.
