My mum has only got a mobile, no landline and it really pisses me off when I cant get hold of her.
What is the point of having it.

A mobile phone is a convenience for the person who owns it. My phone for me is primarily for me to use when I need to contact someone else. When I don't need to use it, I turn it off. When I am on vacation, I turn it off.
In short, I don't let my phone rule my life. That's what voice mail is for. Turn it on, check voice mail, return the calls that are important to you.
It may sound rude to some people, but it is my phone. I bought it, I pay the service on it. Why should I allow others to rule my time.

That's the point of the mobile.. you can turn it off whenever you want to.. in a theater, in a hospital, at a restaurant, at home when you don't wish to be disturbed.
If it's at other times, maybe they're trying to send a subtle hint about who's in control of their time?

1. They are at work
2. They may be banned within the workplace because they may interfere with other telephony equipment.
3. They may be in a library
4. They may be in a 'dead zone' with no signal
5. They may not want to speak to anyone....
6. The battery may be flat and the phone has switched off itself
7. They may be in class, so not permitted
8. They may be in a meeting
9. They may be at a funeral

Can't be bothered to think of anymore right now

If I'm in an important meeting, I'll switch it off. Likewise if I'm having an important conversation (or even one I'm just enjoying) and my mobile goes off, I won't answer it. It's like somebody barging in to a conversation. They can wait, I'll call them back later.

There is nothing more annoying than a mobile slave, it's downright rude to interrupt people, make them wait or blank them because your Nokia is having a fit.

I only use my mobile if I'm going to be late home, or if my car breaks down, so the majority of the time it stays switched off

I agree with you 100%. However, there are places where it's only appropriate to turn it off. For example, funerals, hospitals, church, movie theaters, restaurants. I personally never turn mine off, I just put it on silent when I find myself in a situation that needs silence.
