I'm a first year teacher a few weeks away from starting my first semester teaching high school math. I am looking for some good ideas of ways to get my students to know eachother and have a bit of fun on the first day. Any teachers out there with ideas they have used that have been effective and FUN ?

try something that gets the kids up and moving. i'm a photo teacher but i use a lot off math in the early part of the year. to teach the kids about field of view and focal length (deals with angles) i had the kids stand up, arms length apart to prove to them that humans have 180 deg. vision while they're camera would only have about 110 deg. at the most. they held their arms at length just behind their shoulders and then slowly brought them forward til they came into their periferal vision. when they look where there arms are they're right about even w/ the plane of their body.
this is just one example but every kid understood it. do something simple and obvious. kids like to get up and move so take advantage of that. and don't just leave that for the 1st day. do stuff like that throughout the year. keeps the kids interested and breaks up the monotony of lecture and notes.

"Getting to Know You BINGO"

You create a grid, with 8 or ten columns and five or six rows.

In each box, you write a trait a person might have. For example, "Has more than three brothers or sisters," or "Was not born in the United States," or "Doesn't like chocolate." Be creative. You want things that are interesting and distinctive, but not so weird that they won't apply to anybody.

Each student gets a copy of the grid. Then they are allowed to move around the room and talk to each other. When they find someone who fits the description in one of the boxes, that person signs their name in the box. Each person can only sign another person's grid one time. The first person who has a whole row filled in calls "BINGO!" and is the winner -- once you confirm the accuracy of the signatures.

It's a great way for kids to break the ice.

Ideas for characteristics to put in the boxes:
Fluent in a language other than English.
Is a vegetarian.
Is new to this school.
Has never had a pet.
Is the youngest child in the family.
Knows the second verse to "America the Beautiful" [or whatever].

You get the idea.

I have my students interview each other. They can choose three questions from five that I provide for them. Then they introduce each other to the class. This way, they do not have to introduce themselves, they actually all ahve to speak, and you can start to get to know them.

The second day, and through the end of the first full week, I do something that I think totally makes a connection with the kids, even thought they are taken aback by it at first. I stand at the door and shake each of their hands and say "good morning, ____" If I don't remember their name, I ask for the first letter. The first day of hand shakes, I teach them the different kinds and how to do it properly (eg. Strong Man, Princess, Dead Fish)

I get to know their names well enough to say hi to them on campus, plus I teach them a valuable life skill.

Good luck... remember that your first year will be fun, challenging, exhausting and will most likely make you question your choice to be a teacher, but the next year after that will be two hundred times better!

Dark Phoenix's idea is great. That's exactly what my freshman Math teacher did on my first day of school, and it got us up and around. We really got to know each other. Interviews are not such a good idea because some students might be shy, and he/she would just keep quiet the whole time. Congratulations on your first year and good luck.

Go down the class list..they must say an adjective that starts with the same letter as their name....the next person must say the 1st person's name along with theirs...etc so the last person will end up saying everyone's!! ex... Active Ashley, Bossy Billy, Charming Cody, etc It helps everyone to learn names...
to get their brains going again...try to relate the students to a math problem.....maybe by putting everones age on the board and finding the mean, median, mode

How 'bout this -

You have one chance to make a great impression. What kind of impression do you really want to make? Focus on - Attract attention, Hold attention, Command attention. (What they see, what they hear, what they feel)

Don't forget you are speaking to the 1st generation in history where knowledge is attached to a machine. You can't teach them a thing they can't look up online but you can teach them how to use it better.

Start with one student and have them say their name. Then the next students has to say the first kid's name and then their name and so on.
