I am currently a college senior finishing up my last summer interning with a wonderful company. I have been told by my boss that he expects me to get a permanent job offer with this company.

Here is my problem: My boyfriend has already graduated, and has a good job in the Cincinnati area, whereas the job I am currently interning in is located in a different state. The company has an office in Columbus, but I don't know where this job offer will be located. I have openly spoken of my relationship, and that I would like to work in Ohio, but I don't know if the job offer will happen that way.

My boyfriend and I have decided that we want to get married as soon as I graduate and get a good start, so how do I decide what to do? If I get the offer for the not-in-Ohio office, do I take the job and see if I can get transferred, or do I look elsewhere closer to where his job is currently located? (I know Columbus and Cincy aren't close, but we're willing to commute between the two.)

My boyfriend isn't pressuring me at all to do anything, he says the decision is completely up to me, and he will support me in whatever I do.

He also started his job recently, and will have had about a year with the company when I graduate.

Mandy this is the first of many tough decisions you will have to face during your life. You do have several options you can persue.

1) If the offer is in Columbus then you are already know your answer as you have said this has been discussed with you and your boyfriend.

2) If the offer is in another state you can take it for a year or two to get some valuable job experience then try to relocate back into the Ohio area.

3) If the offer is in another state you can refuse it and test the warm waters of the job market in the Cincy area.

4) If the offer is in another state there is also the chance your boyfriend can test the job market in the area you have been offereed the job in.

The final analysis is that you need to decide and do what is best for you. Good luck in your decision.

The rules of ettiquette would suggest that whoever makes more money, or who is in a better position for advancement, should be the one to keep the job. However, if your boyfriend is trying to convince you that he's more important than your career, I would suggest that he isn't being fair and maybe you should consider a new boyfriend. If you know for sure he is the right one for you then just remember that jobs come and go, but love is forever.

When you take a new job, you usually can't apply for a transfer for a minimum of 6 months to a year, and that is assuming that there is a position open and that you are the best candidate. If you've made up your mind to get married, you probably don't want to take a job away from your spouse.
