Yes and no. It depends on the situation. Subtlety per se is better than the sledgehammer approach in many situations.

For example, sign language... people learning sign language generally think only of the hands forming words. As a result, they only get 30% of the meaning, and miss out on an awful lot.

The hands may form three signs... Boy Shoot Cat.

If people appreciate subtlety, and understand to look at the subtle shift in the eyebrow positions, shoulder shift, eye gaze, and head tilt, all these things can affect the meaning of the signed phrase.

Did the boy shoot the cat?
The boy shot the cat.
The cat shot the boy

and so on, with the exact same hand shapes, but with the 70% of meaning in subtle non manual features.

That's only one example of subtlety.

Spoken languages... tonal languages depend on subtle changes in tone. In one tone, a word may mean river, another tone may mean uncle.

Personal relationships... subtlety can give away a lot of secrets

Philosophical arguments, the key to such arguments often lies in the subtle differences between separate but related words.

The subtlety in music is lost on me. I need the bass drums.
