I lived in a battered woman's shelter for 6 weeks and am now on my own. I live in a pay by the week room and barely able to make ends meet. I have no car, but do work and ride the bus every day. I only want a divorce, but can afford to hire a lawyer or even the cost of filing. What do I do? I have no children, so that is my only blesing at this time. Someone please help me with a solution>

call a lawyer and ask him about putting an ad in the paper some states has that option. ask the people at the shelter you are staying at about that or possibly about legal aid since you are a battered wife. I have been there and the scars are deep but you will be OK. A restraining order is probably a good idea too, I know that it is just a piece of paper but it does intimidate some of those lowlife men out there that think that we are nothing and that they have a right to hit and push us around. be careful and keep you eyes open and watch your back, stay safe. I hope that this helps.

Depending on where you are, you should call the courthouse and ask them how would you go about a Do-it-yourself divorce since there are no kids or property involved. This will be the correct & best means of getting help for things to go well.

Wow, what a tough situation, honey. Look for a lawyer who gives a free consultation and ask his advice. You might also look into a lawyer who doesn't get paid unless you do. Like maybe there's a way to make your husband pay for it, especially considering he desserted you.

Good luck to you!

look in the phone book and contact lawyers or go to the shelter and ask if they have any resources. if you explain your situation someone might help you or have information on who can help you.
