Your answers are all in there. Oh and before getting your work published, enter as many FREE competitions as you can with your poems, this way you have a better chance of getting a book. Also, dont use the poems that you did in a competition twice.Try and get your poems published in magazines start of with small magazines and then go onto bigger companies... Keep a record of what your doing, when and pricing and so on.. i.e "24th July 2004 - Poems:"ur poem name here" sent to magazine company "company name here"

Do NOT put your poem on poetry.com. There are soooo many complaints about this company. You could write the utmost crap and be accepted. Publishers do not view this as a valid poetry company.
You want to do what another person said and buy a copy of Poets and Writers. I subscribe to this magazine. It is the best magazine for writers (yes, beating writer's digest and the writer) in my opinion. They focus a good portion of their magazine on poetry.
In the back they have contests and legitimate places to send your work. If you are trying to put out a chapbook (which is what a book of poetry is usually called) they also have listings for that. In the very back be careful, they do put a warning in the front of their advertising section which is where anyone who pays for an ad can place things-but I haven't heard of many complaints even from that area-you just have to look into those more.
The website for poets and writers is pw.org
The Poetry Market is also good. It IS expensive though.

There's not much of a commercial market for poetry today. That's because anyone with a rude understanding of iambic pentameter who can slap two words that rhyme on the end of a line thinks that he/she is a POET. Most people who get poems published have to resort to a 'vanity publisher' where you pay them to make a book of your poems. There are also a lot of rip off artists waiting to make a buck from the unwary would-be poet. You have to be careful, and make sure you're dealing with someone legitimate.

Be very careful about whom you believe. I can't remember their name, but there is an organization that tells would-be poets that their poems are just wonderful and suitable for publication. They promise that their poems will be included in the next volume of their compilation of poetry --- and all you have to do is send in about $50-$100 to reserve your copy of the book. Well, duh. You are paying to have your poems published, which isn't what you want. But they are so nice and make it sound like your poems are so good, when in fact they would publish any junk from anyone who pays the money.

If you are in the USA you need to go to a large bookstore and pick up a copy of Poets & Writers magazine. ww.pw.org. Look around and see if there are copies of other magazines that publish poetry and pick up a few copies of them too.
Then look in the back of Poets n Writers. They will have a section called "Calls for Manuscripts." This is a list of magazines that want to publish poetry.
Now you must do research. If any of these magazines have websights go look at them. If you can find copies go buy one. if the local institution of higher learning has a copy in the library go look at that.
(most of the time, you do not need to be a student at a college to use the library. If you just behave yourself.)
Public library check them out too.
What you are looking for is - does this magazine publish my kind of poetry. If you can imagine your poem next to one of the ones in the magazine send it in. The magazine will also give you tips on how to format your submission. On disk, three copies without your name on them, one with your name, in frosting on a giant cookie, whatever.
Whatever they say do it their way. They will just toss out everything that doesn't fit their format.
Also check out a book called Poets Market. It is expensive to own but most libraries have a copy.
Vanity presses are crooks.

a reliable shot is finding to work out if a close-by city has a author's society, or, greater properly a poet society. Bonus factors if there's a poetry club. What you desire to do is befriend somebody interior the industry, it extremely is totally complicated to relase a e book of 10 poems except they are epics, yet you will discover different interior sight poets and make a team e book. a buddy of mine had her paintings printed in a e book that replaced into offered everywhere in the midwest as a results of fact she knew a poet from her city. finding on line at publishers is yet differently, you will discover in the event that they are already doing a launch with different poets and are searching for submissions.

Get Poet's Market for publishers. If you want people to rate your work to see if it's good enough for publishing, I'd reccommend writing.com. In my experience, most of what gets read is poetry. If people like your work than break out Poet's Market and go get a book published!

That would be great! What you could do is make a book out of your poems and send it to a publishing company! See what they think! You should make it a really original book so it catches their eye.
Good Luck!

It is harder to get poetry published than fictional stories or indeed non-fiction.
But, on the upside, it is also much cheaper to self publish.
You could collaborate with an artist and do a limited edition, numbered run, thus pushing the base price up.
Good luck!!

Composing poetry is a wonderful form of expression that comes from somewhere deep within our imaginations and fantasies.
Sometimes it's waking up in the middle of the night, grabbing a pen and quickly writing down thoughts before they are whisked from our memories. On other times, it's during moments of reflection of happy, sad, or even tragic occasions in our lives that inspires us to allow these memories to guide our hand and record these thoughts in poetic splendor.
Here's a good place to start where you can show your poetry to others who can enjoy it and even critique it for you:
