Fossil Fuels, Petroleum, coal and natural gas, are considered to be the most important source of energy today because they are cheap and their use led to the industrial revolution. there is now an emphasis on transfering our energy dependance to other forms of energy dependance because fossil fuels are running out and they add a large amount of carbon back into the carbon cycle. the options are, solar, wind, tidal, geothermal etc. there is also a company that developed a way to make petroleum from the remnants of the meat processing industry. This solution is great for our short time needs because it allows the production of oil for an indefinate period of time and adds no new carbon to the cycle, it also means that we use 100% of all of the animals that enter this process instead of throwing away a large quantity. one of the things that can be done to reduce our dependance on oil is to adopt "distributed generation" for our electricity needs. that is to manufacture your one electricity on site using solar or wind generators. this reduces the load on power plants making them far more efficient. most solar systems will pay for themselves in 2-3 years, after that you are getting free energy plus the cost of maintanance.

There are lots of ways to make energy from the sun. As Engineer mentioned above, all of our energy sources (even oil) are forms of stored solar energy. Photovoltaics are still fairly expensive due to the state of the technology and the shortage of silicon feed stocks. Several groups are working on non-PV solar energy systems that concentrate sunlight to run a heat engine. This will ultimately be cheaper than PV panels and has the potential to be cost competitive with fossil fuel-based electricity generation.

I think the most talked about energy source is the possibility of oil shale. I say this because the United States has the world's largest deposit of oil shale. As things aren't exactly "new", new technologies have advanced the ranges of possibilities as an alternate source of energy. If this happens and we can get some of the production costs down, you'll be able to think of the United States as the "New Persian Gulf" of the world because the numbers the US will be able to produce is astronomical. Take a look at the World Energy Council website. It has an interesting article about it. The link is http://www.worldenergy.org/wec-geis/publications/reports/ser/shale/shale.asp
