When did you have your first ultrasound? My OB wants to do one at 11 weeks. Isn't that too early to really see anything? We pay everything out of pocket so i'm just wondering if this is necessary. Do you know when most OB's do first ultrasounds?

My OB says she always does this no matter what. She doesn't suspect anything abnormal. I told her we are trying to save money by not doing anything unnecessary, but she says she always does an early ultrasound.

Thank you all very much. I'll tell the doctor I am going to wait till the 18th week or whatever the next time is. The heartbeat was normal when they did that last monday, and i'm feeling normal. I think I prefer to wait and save money. I hate having bad insurance.

Some caregivers NEVER do an u/s. The ACOG actually recommends that ultrasounds NOT be done as a routine procedure. I had one "routine" u/s with my first child at about 16 weeks and NO ultrasounds with baby #2 or baby #3.

At only 11 weeks, I'd ask your doctor why does he think you should have an ultrasound this early and what he is looking for. Then you can judge if you think it is really something that is NEEDED or something that he is doing "just because he can do it."

With ANY prenatal test, ask YOURSELF what you would do with the info the test provides. If you would do anything different about your pregnancy based on the potential results, you probably want the test. If you wouldn't change a thing, then the test is probably not necessary.

I had my 1st ultrasound at 15 weeks to make sure the baby is growing properly. But on the other hand if you are paying out of pocket let your Dr. know "look this my money I spend it the way I want, and I am going to wait, because it's to soon. I at least think you should wait between 18-20 weeks longs if you don't have any health history. Oh by the way with my 1st child I had only 1 ultrasound and it was at 6 1/2 months and still they told me the wrong gender. Use you hard working money wisely.

When i lived overseas they did an ultrasound every two weeks, from the moment I became pregnant.

When i had my second child here they did the first at 12 weeks, another at 5 months (when the brain and muscular skeletal system forms) and the last at 7 months.

An ultrasound gives a vivid picture of your baby, how he or she is growing, if the umbiblical cord is floating freely, if the limbs are forming correctly, if you have twins and need extra nutrients, if the heart is pumping correctly.

It's a beautiful thing girlfriend. There are a lot of problems that may be correctable in the womb, or at least identified so you can make choices if your baby has genetic abnormalities.

Pay the money and i'd bet money you will watch your little baby floating, playing around and be glad that you did.

the uncomplicated ultrasounds are 'extremely risk-free' which skill they do no longer pose a 'considerable' threat to the toddler. the advantages extremely outweigh the disadvantages. although, you are able to no longer have ultrasounds except mandatory as they easily are actually not without threat. remember years in the past they additionally concept x rays have been risk-free.. in recent times a minimum of maximum docs do aid you already know relating to the disadvantages of ultrasound. a minimum of mine did. 4 remains interior risk-free limits. yet stay far flung from those new 3-D ultrasounds.. they use a mega dose of ultrasound and that they do no longer look to be risk-free. there has been plenty controversy and different places are refusing to do them, purely the greater earnings oriented places. go forward and characteristic this ultrasound... 4 is superb.

My first ultrasound was done at 6 weeks only because I had a history of miscarriages and my blood test showed a problem.
Then I had one at 12 weeks, 18, 24 weeks, 36 weeks.

The average first ultrasound is done between 16 to 24 weeks of pregnancy.

If all your blood test are okay and you aren't experiencing any problems I would ask him if he could wait a little longer.

I had my first one at 6 weeks to make sure I had a viable pregnancy. I actually saw the little heartbeat and heard it beat. It was amazing and every ultrasound after will also be amazing. I think seeing your little baby growing is worth whatever out of pocket $ you have to spend.

My first ultrasound was at 8 weeks. You can see the baby on the ultrasound after 6 weeks, you can hear the heartbeat and they can see if the baby is where its supposed to be. I would advise you do it.

I had my first ultrasound at 12 weeks and was really surprised at how clear the picture was. I could see the baby moving it's arms and legs. It's really exciting to see your baby for the first time. It is neccessary because the doctors can see if everything is developing normally and they'll be able to tell you your exact due date.

My first one was done at 12 weeks because I was carrying twins. I guess it depends on what your doc thinks is going on.
Have you asked HIM why he wants to do it? Perhaps he feels that there's a possibility of some sort of problem or you fall into the high-risk category; we don't know - we're not your doctors! You need to call your doc and ask why he wants it done. If he says its just routine, then you should have the option to say you want to wait.

If you pay everything out of pocket, you don't need the u/s around that time, unless you have medical reasons to perform one. The u/s is done to verify your pregnancy & due date.

The necessary ultrasound is done around 19-20w, that's when they measure all anatomy, organs, growth, etc.
