My father is a gardener. I help him sometimes, we go to rich people's houses and all day long we have to be in the hot sun, kind of treated like d*gs, actually worse( because nowadays many people treat their dogs like their kids). Sometimes we have to trim trees, and carry bunch of branches and loads on our backs , and for this reason we get Injured at times, sometimes extreme neck pain etc. Many times though, it's a great feeling you get by cutting grass, watering plants,...that's like the easy part but then there's other annoying, hard, and tiring, and dangerous things we have to do. So, I don't like garderning that much, unless it's my house cause my house just has a lawn and some plants and it's simple. But what i see is many people in TV make it seem like gardening is Fun, because all they do is work with little plants, plant little flowers or something and that's it( Example: Good morning America news show Gardening tips lady), when actually gardening is pretty hellish.

Many people who say they like gardening enjoy even the hard stuff.

It really depends on what type of gardening you like.

I like trees and Bonsai. Collecting wild trees to turn into bonsai is as hard as anything you described - nothing like digging up a 5-10 foot tree without destroying tis roots!

It really depends on what type of gardening you like.

I would also arguwe that someone who spends hours a day in their garen planting flowers and weeding is working just as hard as I am getting those trees. Spending hours crouched over or kneeling in a garden can cause just as many back problems as you are describing.

One has to have a love for something about it! In my case it is the plants, I am a scientist more than a gardener. I make a living by using my knowledge of plants to grow plants for others. If I can teach or do research then I am paid to do things that are fun. It is rare that those opportunities come to those with less than a Master's degree. Right now, I cannot work on advanced degrees because I have a family to take care of.

I agree, those in the business are far too often mistreated and are not respected for what they know and the abilities they have! It is hard work and few can actually do it well.

It is sad texas1970 has such poor eye sight, he/she might want to make an appointment.

now back to the subject
Your right the maintenance of a garden can be pretty hellish and that is why people will pay someone - almost anyone else to do it for them. I do my own "hellish" work because I did landscape maintenance while in High School and College so I know how to do it - and yes I can afford to hire it done if I choose to. You mentioned it's a great feeling, sometimes not so great. For me it is the chance to block out the rest of the madness in my life.

The veg & fruit are just fun to have, how cool is it to go out pull up a carrot, wash it off and wander around the yard munching on it. Or like the strawberries, raspberries or blueberries go pick some to add to your pancakes or bowl of cereal. I also do jam and jelly and it's fun to watch people as they get my humor as I remind them is is "home made".
I live on a 1970s subdivision size lot, just as an encouragement to others

I love your question. Personally, I love gardening because I hire your father (or a man like him) to do the really tough jobs and I plant the "little flowers." Once I did the heavier work too and it is satisfying and therapeutic. Digging in soil may be similar to doing yoga. Soil isn't political, personal, vindictive, demanding or guilt provoking. For people with vision, who start with something ordinary but see possibilities, and bring them to life by digging and planting and pruning and tending, the satisfaction can be enormous. There are very few things in life in which we can have such positive effect: Not our jobs, seldom times our families, or our communities, or our governments -- but oh our gardens!

Your description is reminiscent of work I did as a Landscaper, or landscape maintenance.

To me, gardening is something you do for yourself, actually in a flower or veggie garden.

Reguardless, playing outside in the dirt, with plants is very satisfying.
