A litre ≈ 0.26417 US gallons, or ≈ 0.21997 UK gallons. (The gallon in the UK is equal to about 1.2 US gallons, so the answer's different depending on where you live.)
In fact, the actual definition of a litre isn't in terms of liquid volume, but cubic space: a litre is the volume of a cube with sides of 10cm each (that makes 1000 cubic cm).
