distribute the minus like so:
2x - 4y - 5x + y
then combine like terms:
2x - 5x - 4y + y =
-3x - 3y

Remember that -(5x-y) is the same as + (-1)(5x-y) so first 'multiply through' with -1 (which will change the signs) to get

(2x-4y)+(-5x+y)

Now you can just drop the parenthesis and get

2x-4y-5x+y

Then you add up the like terms (the x terms and the y terms) and get

-3x-3y

And, if you have to reduce it to its lowest terms, factor out the -3 to get

-3(x+y)

OK?

But *you* are the one who needs to practice this

The original:
  ( 2x - 4y ) - ( 5x - y )
Distribute the negative:
  ( 2x - 4y ) + ( -5x + y )
Remove the parenthesis:
  2x - 4y - 5x + y
Group the x's and the y's:
  ( 2x - 5x ) + ( -4y + y )
Add the x's and the y's:
  -3x + -3y
Divide both by -3:
  -3 ( x + y )

as there is no multiplication nor division you remove the brackets:
2x - 4y - 5x - y
Which you can then rearrange (in your head):
2x - 5x - 4y - y
Which equals:
-3x - 3y
Which can be simplified like this:
-3 (x + y)

(2x = 4y) - (5x - y)

clearing parenthesis. if a ( - ) sign precides the parenthesis change all signs within the parenthesis.

2x - 4y - 5x + y

2x - 5x - 4y + y

Collecting terms

- 3x -3y

The answer is -3x -3y
