What is the difference between a fear and a phobia? Listen to my description, and tell me if I have a fear or a phobia of spiders.
---When there's a spider in my room, I won't even kill it w/ the vacuum because I'm afraid it will fall on my head. Then when it gets on the wall, I try to kill it with a book, but my arms won't move to kill it. Then it start crying because I'm so mad at myself, and so scared of the spider. (This whole time my brain is yelling at me to kill it, but I won't, that's why I'm so mad at myself.) Thanks for the help!

Yeah, I actually do cry like a maniac if I can't kill it. Sometimes I have to bribe my sister to kill it for me.

You are suffering from an acute phobia the underlying fear you realize is irrational but that your body and brain stop communicating once exposed to the precursor such as the spider in your room, your body freezes resulting in the immobility and your consious mind argues with your unconsious reaction to the pre-cursor. If you are intersted in treatment there are tons of options but you first need to decide if it is only a reaction to spiders or other things aswell. Good Luck!

You most likely have a fear of spiders. Arachnophobia is a fear of spiders though. A fear is not as severe as a phobia though.

A fear is scared to kill it.

A phobia is like screaming and crying hysterically. Asking someone else to kill it before you faint.

Trust me, I went to see King Kong with my friends and there were GIANT spiders in the movie. My friend started to cry and she hid. She even put her legs up on the chair because she was afraid a spider would be on the floor. That, my friend is a phobia.

Hope that helps.

Sounds more like a phobia than a fear. A phobia is more hindering than a fear; a phobia prevents you from doing normal, everyday activities because you are so afraid all of the time. The best thing to do is talk to a psychologist, they can help you get through your phobia. :)

well thats probably a phobia. A fear is just a common fear, nothing to serious. But a phobia is something so serious it effects the way you think and act. Im afraid of spiders too and if u saw one i dont think i would even get next to it, not even to hit it with a book!!! lol. i would get like windex and spray it from a far distance so that we have NO CONTACT whatsoever. You shoud try that one day. Just spray it with something harmful/poisonous.

You have arachnophobia. Most people have phobia so do not feel you are alone. I myself have acrophobia - fear of heights. I have no idea how it came about and when l got it. When l was a little girl, l rode a Ferris wheel and felt really weird. It happened thrice, all in carnival rides. I do not ride those things anymore. l know l look stupid to others but l dont care. I'm really scared. If your case gets out of hand, better consult a professional. I hope l was of help.

What you have hear - is a clear case of being female - it is not a phobia - you are just being a normal illogical female !

If a big hairy spider crawled up between your legs - what would you do then - enjoy it or consult the dictionary for difference between definitions ?

My advice to you - is to go down the deepest darkest tunnel with a torch so you can see what you're doing - and go to sleep there and let them crawl all over you all night - by the morning you'll either be ready for the funny farm - or you'll be cured - you can call it a desensitising treatment !

A fear is more controllable than a phobia...for example ...I'm afraid of spiders but I can touch one to move it outside.

A phobia is something you can't control. Fear is something that you can overtake if it becomes necessary. It sound like more of a phobia to me than a fear.
