I would look more to the idle air control motor. It controls engine RPM when you let off the gas pedal.
-No offense to the other posters, but a sticking return spring would be noticed even when you go to let off the gas to slow down in gear.
-It wouldn't be a TPS problem, b/c you would notice it while cruising in gear.

Easy way to check this problem, Tap lightly on the idle air control motor with a small hammer and then go drive it. If it stops doing it, I'd advise you just to go ahead and replace it. It's bound to do it again. Or maybe next time it will start stalling on you.

The throttle cable is dirty and it is sticking. you remove your foot off the pedal, but the spring that pulls back on the throttle is 'slow' to respond. Not a transmission problem. Could be as easy as some aerosol spray (like WD-40) on the throttle cable!

it is your throttle positioning sensor it controls the position of your throttle when they go bad the engine will over rev when you let your foot off the gas with it being bad the computer cant set it to the right position it is not hard to change and it is not very expensive
