What you're looking for is a method of calculating area, and how area is calculated depends a lot on the shape of the area in question.

For a rectangular space, like many rooms of a house, the area can be calculated by multiplying length times width. For a non-rectangular space, though, the rules are different; the area of a triangular space, for instance, can be figured several ways, but length times width isn't one of them! :-) A circle's area depends solely on its radius; multiply that radius by itself, and multiply the result by approximately 3.1416.

Most complex areas can be broken down into one or more component spaces whose areas can then be added together.

The last thing to remember is that your area will only be represented in "square feet" if the original dimensions (length, width, radius, whatever) are represented in feet. If the original dimensions are in inches, for instance, then the final result will be in "square inches," and if it's "square feet" you want, you'll have to convert by dividing your answer by 144 (which is 12 x 12).

Hope that helps. If you have a more specific question, feel free to post it!

(L times w) if if sides are 90* to each other
(L times w)+(L times w divide by 2 ) if invoves a triangle
rec./square triangle {split and solve in order then add answers}
(L times w)+(R{=1/2L} times pi divide by 2) if involves half a circle
rec./square circle {split and solve in order then add answers}
hope it helps!
