It is a term for the crux of a situation. The underlying meaning of something. Dwon to the nitty gritty meaning down to the last and most imoprtant part of the problem at hand
It comes from the slave ships. Down in the hold was nitty (lice) and gritty (dirt) but that was the heart of the ship - where all the work was done

In its correct form it is "NITTY GRITTY" - which means getting down to the bottom of things.
One dict. states it comes from the 1950's Nitty Nurse for schools. Her job was to visit schools and de-lice the kids heads. These were usually dirty (gritty) - hence NITTY GRITTY.
Ther logical version is from the Lation NITTOPRIOUS GRITTORIOUS. Referring to the Romans invading England in 1445. Roads were just piles of GRIT and very POROUS. Their leader was Pompous Nittoporious. His soldiers put the 2 together - in later years it was shortened to NITTY GRITTY.
Hope this helps. All the best.

It means getting down to the finer details of a matter. Grit is large grains of sand so nitty gritty means finer than that.

Not at all, it means "getting down to the finer detail of something", as in, "I was in a meeting this morning and we got right down to the nitty gritty of all the points"..... comprende

No its not derogatory.
It means getting down to the finer details of something, the nuts and bolts so to speak.
Where it comes from would be guess work on my part, so I won't!!
